EV Charging in Underground Garages

No LAN. No WiFi. No cellular.

EV charging infrastructure for underground garages is different: no network coverage, high cost for LAN cable runs, unreliable WiFi mesh. HeyCharge solves it with patented SecureCharge technology — EV charging in the Tiefgarage via Bluetooth, with asynchronous billing through the app. 100% reliable, even where other systems fail.

The problem

Why conventional wallboxes fail in underground garages

EV charging in underground garages almost always fails for one reason: connectivity.

No cellular in the Tiefgarage

Underground garages are signal dead zones. LTE, 4G, 5G — all blocked by reinforced concrete. Conventional wallboxes with SIM cards can't connect. Authentication and billing fail. Background: EV charging in parking garages without cellular and why charging apps fail in underground garages.

LAN cabling is expensive

Running network cable from the utility room to every parking space — cable trays, switches, patch panels. Installation cost balloons to €200–500 per space just for data lines.

WiFi mesh is unreliable

Mesh WiFi in underground garages sounds like a solution but it's flaky: reinforced concrete, signal reflections, property management fielding support calls at 9 PM when someone can't charge.

Standard wallboxes break down

Without network, no authentication, no billing, no §14a EnWG grid control. The wallbox either refuses to charge — or charges without any record, uncontrolled and unbilled.

The solution

SecureCharge: Bluetooth, not LAN

Patented offline technology. The smartphone becomes the network.

1

Driver opens the app at the car

The HeyCharge app connects via Bluetooth directly to the wallbox — no internet needed. Authentication and charge release happen locally, in milliseconds.

2

Charging runs offline

The wallbox charges the vehicle and stores usage data in an Eichrecht-compliant manner. No cloud connection at the wallbox. No network, no problem.

3

Data syncs asynchronously

Once the driver leaves the garage and reconnects, the app uploads usage data to the HeyCharge backend. Billing runs automatically each month.

Compliance

Legally compliant — even offline

Eichrecht, MID, §14a EnWG — all requirements met. No compromises in the Tiefgarage.

Planning charging infrastructure for an underground garage

An underground garage is not a car park with a roof. Concrete walls, a single building connection and parking spaces under separate ownership turn the electrical work into a five-step project — in this order.

1

Survey

How many spaces, how are they allocated, where is the building connection, how much capacity is free? We survey the garage and document the cable routes before anything is ordered.

2

Grid connection and capacity

The most common project blocker is not the wallbox but the building connection. Where existing capacity falls short, dynamic load management decides whether an expensive grid upgrade is needed at all.

3

Designing load management

All charge points share the available capacity. HeyCharge handles this over a Zigbee mesh between charge points — no network cabling through the whole garage. Connection to §14a EnWG controllability is planned in per project.

4

Installation in an occupied building

Cable routes, fire protection, coordination with owners and tenants. Installation runs in stages so the garage stays usable — and is prepared so further spaces can be added later without a second rebuild.

5

Operation and billing

App-based access, Eichrecht-compliant billing per user, fault handling and maintenance. The property manager receives one invoice instead of thirty individual cases.

What drives cost in an underground garage

Hardware is rarely the largest item. Three factors determine the budget:

Cable runs

The further a space sits from the building connection, the more expensive it gets. Laying for full build-out straight away means paying once rather than twice.

Grid upgrade — or load management

Increasing the connection capacity quickly runs into five figures. Dynamic load management avoids it entirely in most residential properties.

Connectivity

Conventional systems need LAN to every charge point or mobile repeaters. That line item disappears with SecureCharge, because authentication happens over Bluetooth at the charge point itself.

Charging infrastructure in residential properties qualifies for subsidies of up to €1,500 per parking space in 2026. The application must be filed before ordering.

Charging in underground garages — common questions

Does this work without mobile signal and without WiFi in the garage?

Yes. Charging sessions are authorised over Bluetooth directly between the app and the charge point. Session data is signed, buffered locally and transmitted once a connection is available again. No network is needed at the parking space.

Do all parking spaces have to be equipped at once?

No. The sensible approach is to design the electrical installation once for full build-out and add charge points as demand appears. That avoids a second rebuild without requiring the whole garage to be fitted immediately.

Who decides on charging infrastructure in a homeowners association?

Since the WEMoG reform every owner has a right to a charge point. The association decides how it is implemented — which is why a shared solution is usually cheaper and technically cleaner than many individual applications.

Is the building connection enough for several charge points?

In most residential properties yes, provided dynamic load management is used. It distributes available capacity across active sessions instead of permanently reserving full power for every charge point.
